Political Donations WA
by WA Senator Andrew Murray (Australian Democrats Senator)

BIG money politics

This website is a project undertaken by Senator Andrew Murray and forms part of the Australian Democrats campaign to reform political funding and disclosure legislation. However, as a Western Australian Senator, it concerns only those donations made to political parties in this State.

The Democrats strongly believe that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Large private political donations are rarely bestowed on political parties to advance the strength and stability of our pluralist democracy. Instead, they usually come with strings attached either to buy access and policy favours or to reward policy stances.

As long as this powerful mix of money and politics remains loosely regulated, democracy will continue to be undermined because the potential for corrupt or undesirable influence in Australian politics will continue. Voters are right to wonder why such large sums of money are donated if there is no benefit to be gained, a concern this website seeks to address.

There are many questions to be asked, not least of which is: Why hasn't it been made a crime for political donations to come with strings attached? (Like Part 1VA of tax law, there should be a general anti-avoidance provision in electoral law).

Summarised on this page in a series of tables and analytical graphs are the main findings of our investigation into West Australian political donations. The tables list the top ranked donors by various categories, whilst the graphs paint a picture of the West Australian political landscape from the perspective of political donations. These results, among others can be created using the search function provided on this site.
